Serbian Teacher among the World’s Best Featured

profesoriBELGRADE – Svetlana Belić Malinić, the director of the Modern Secondary School in Belgrade, has won second place at a prestigious competition for the best teacher of the 21st century, an award given out every year by Pearson, one the world’s highest valued and biggest educational institutions.

Svetlana received the award in Hong Kong, at the seventh annual conference on learning in the 21st century.

This is the first time a teacher from Serbia has received such a prestigious award. Of the total of 8,700 teachers from the whole world who took part in the competition, the organizers nominated just 31 for the award, and Svetlana won second place of the three short-listed teachers.

The award for the best teacher of the 21st century is given to teachers and schools who show excellence in the use of technologies for easier and better acquisition of knowledge. The award is especially prized because it is given out by Pearson, who sets trends in educations. No teacher or school from Serbia have so far been nominated in this prestigious competition.

What set Svetlana apart from the other competitors is an innovative and original approach of work with schoolchildren, which she has described in a scientific paper and translated into a video clip which she presented before the jury. In the clip she shows how her daughter and learning with her inspired her to apply the same principles in her work with other children in her school.

“I wanted to show the importance of the role played by parents in the education of children, and a completely different educational model, which we use in the Modern Secondary School. Our school does not just educate promising and successful generations of young people, but also helps them to find themselves through a high-quality mentorship program. In a pleasant family atmosphere our pupils acquire knowledge and skills they need for the digital literacy of the 21st century,” Svetlana Belić Malinić said.

She added the she was exceptionally happy for helping Serbia be recognized in the world in this way as a country which helps schoolchildren to develop technological skills of the 21st century.

In the Modern Secondary School Svetlana has established a very innovative program of teaching and learning, which inspires students to creative thinking and mastering the teaching program with the help of contemporary methods of learning. She says the aim is to create from the students attending the Modern Secondary School, a newly-opened international secondary school, successful citizens of the world, educated in Serbia, who will be fully ready to accept the knowledge and skills needed for the 21st century.
